The Captain, having just climbed out of his B-17, stood
on the ground looking in amazement at the flak damage.
It was hardly believable that these B-17s could absorb
such punishment and perform. They had just returned
from the great strike on the ball-bearing complex
at Schweinfurt, the tour de force of the
8th Air Force in unescorted daylight bombing.
