The Americans #946
1st. Lieutenant William E. Greer
U.S. Army Mess Dress, 1938

On April 5th, 1937, the War Department reestablished
the special evening dress, the dark blue mess jacket and
a cape prescribed for officers but on an optional basis.
The blue mess uniform, 1937 pattern, is shown on
our figure which is of the artillery branch of the service,
hence the red facings. The lieutenant wears authorized
miniature metals as follows left to right: Distinguished
Service Medal, Soldier's Medal, World War 1 Victory Medal.
Both the Distinguished Service Medal and Soldier's Medal
were awarded for personal heroism, the latter for
heroism "not involving actual conflict with the enemy."
